Labour MP to refund £2,300 for misusing taxpayers' money

What happened?

A recent inquiry found that Labour MP Marsha de Cordova used £2,300 of taxpayers' money for campaigning just a day after the election was called. This breach of Parliamentary rules involved sending a "personal election pledge" letter to constituents.

Details of the investigation

The inquiry discovered that the letter lacked specific details about her constituency and mainly focused on her mission to improve the Battersea area. It also included promises to address various issues if re-elected, such as energy bills and transport problems.

Outcome of the inquiry

Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, Daniel Greenberg, confirmed that the letter contained campaigning elements and aimed to promote her re-election. Ms. de Cordova has accepted the findings, apologized for the breach, and will repay the £2,388 used for stationery and postage.

Despite the violation, the matter will not be referred to the Standards Committee for further review.
