Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has again demanded an immediate general election — and not another Tory leadership experiment

He told the BBC: “This is not just a soap opera at the top of the Tory party – it’s doing huge damage to the reputation of our country.

“We need a general election so the public can have their say on this utter chaos.”

The new leader and PM is expected to be revealed by next Friday at the latest, after a weekend of tussling between Tory MPs to gather support for the leadership.

Last night a poll from Opinium for ITV’s Peston – carried out before Liz Truss quit – showed that 68 per cent of the public would want an election if she threw in the towel.

But Penny Mordaunt backer Robbie Moore MP warned against more chaos in a general vote, saying: “The last thing that anybody wants is more of an economic shock, more instability that is created, and I think absolutely the last thing we need is a general election at this moment in time.”

A petition demanding the public get a new vote has now passed 300,000 signatures.

The next general election is currently scheduled to take place no later than January 2025.
