Tory Chief's Suggestion Met with Dismissal from Chancellor
Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has dismissed a proposal from Tory Party deputy chairman Lee Anderson to send asylum seekers to the Orkney Islands as an alternative to the current plan of sending them to Rwanda. Anderson had suggested that a "nice Scottish island" in the Orkneys would be a suitable place to process migrants. However, Hunt brushed off the idea as "colourful language," stating that the government will do whatever it takes to stop the boats. Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt also rejected the idea, emphasizing that the reliability of SNP ferry services would make the Orkney Islands an impractical option.
Supreme Court Ruling on Rwanda Plan
Last week, the Supreme Court ruled that the current plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda is unlawful. This ruling has prompted discussions about alternative solutions for processing and accommodating migrants.
Tory Chief's Proposal Sparks Criticism
Lee Anderson's proposal to use the Orkney Islands as a location for processing asylum seekers has been met with criticism. Orkney and Shetland MP Alistair Carmichael, as well as Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Home Affairs, expressed disappointment in Anderson's remarks, stating that they showed "disdain" towards his constituents.
