Home Secretary Braverman calls for reform of UN Refugee Convention and tougher immigration laws

"No one crossing from France to UK by small boat is 'fleeing imminent peril'"

Suella Braverman, the UK Home Secretary, has declared that individuals arriving in Britain by small boat are not "fleeing imminent peril" and have no "good cause" to be granted entry. In a speech delivered in Washington DC, Braverman called on world leaders to rethink the 1951 UN Refugee Convention, arguing that it is outdated and contributing to the European small boats crisis.

Outdated asylum rules facilitate illegal migration, says Braverman

Braverman criticized global asylum rules as being antiquated and having expanded over time, allowing illegal migrants to "shop around" for their desired destination country. She described the UN Refugee Convention as an "incredible achievement of its age," but emphasized that we now live in a completely different era. Braverman questioned whether the convention, as interpreted by the courts, is fit for the modern age or in need of reform.

Asylum-seeking and economic migration should be differentiated, argues Home Secretary

The Home Secretary stressed that "seeking asylum and seeking better economic prospects are not the same thing." Braverman stated that it is unsustainable to maintain a system where individuals can freely travel through multiple safe countries or reside in safe countries for extended periods while selecting their preferred destination to claim asylum. She also disputed the notion that being gay or a woman alone qualifies for protection, asserting that the current system is not viable.

Negative consequences of uncontrolled migration and multiculturalism

Braverman criticized the idea of uncontrolled migration, contending that it will fuel multiculturalism, a system she deems to have failed in Britain. According to her, multiculturalism does not require newcomers to integrate and allows them to live parallel lives within society. She argued that this approach has caused individuals to be in society but not of society.

Increased criminality and negative impact on society

The Home Secretary revealed that UK police chiefs have informed her about the elevated levels of criminal activity resulting from the recent surge in small boat crossings. The criminality includes drug-related crimes, exploitation, and prostitution. Braverman emphasized that individuals who choose to enter the UK illegally from another safe country have already demonstrated their contempt for British laws.
