Fuel duty champion Jonathan Gullis returns as Deputy Tory Chairman after reshuffle

Jonathan Gullis back in the political spotlight

Fuel duty champion Jonathan Gullis has reclaimed his position as Deputy Tory Chairman after a recent reshuffle forced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson. The Stoke-on-Trent MP, known for leading the Keep It Down campaign, aims to support Rishi Sunak's standing in the Red Wall.

Changes in key positions

Following the reshuffle, Education minister Robert Halfon announced he will step down at the General Election, while defence minister James Heappey resigned with a call for increased spending. Nus Ghani is now the Minister for Europe, and Leo Docherty has taken over the defence role. Luke Hall has assumed Mr. Halfon's responsibilities, and Kevin Hollinrake has been promoted to minister of state in Business.

Push for fuel duty freeze

In a recent development, a group of around 40 MPs, including Gullis, advocated for a freeze on fuel duty and the retention of a 5p temporary reduction in the levy. Howard Cox, founder of FairFuel UK, emphasized the importance of the Chancellor delivering a budget that benefits motorists, stating that drivers should not be continuously burdened financially.

These calls for action came after MPs and peers penned a letter to Jeremy Hunt, urging him to maintain current rates and the 5p cut in the upcoming Spring Budget.
