Former Labour MP Nick Brown has confirmed that he will not be standing in the next general election. Brown, who previously served as chief whip, had his whip removed in September 2022 and has been under investigation since. However, party officials have yet to disclose the reason for his suspension or when the investigation will conclude.
Resignation with a "Heavy Heart"
In a statement released today, Brown announced his decision not to stand in the next election and revealed that he is also leaving the Labour Party with a "heavy heart." He criticized the party's complaints process as "fundamentally, and inexcusably, flawed."
Long-Serving Politician
Brown, who represents the Newcastle upon Tyne East constituency, has been one of the Labour Party's longest-serving politicians at the age of 72. He served as chief whip for every Labour leader from Tony Blair onwards.
Ongoing Investigation
When he was initially suspended, Brown stated that he was fully cooperating with the investigation. He said, "There has been a complaint made about me to the Labour Party, which is under investigation. I am therefore under an administrative suspension from the Labour Party until the investigation is concluded. I'm not aware of what the complaint is, but I am cooperating fully with the investigation."
Despite his suspension, Brown continues to receive a taxpayer-funded salary of £86,584.
