First Labour MP supports campaign to freeze fuel prices as Brits pay more than big firms

High tax rates for motorists revealed

British motorists have been informed that they pay a higher rate of tax than multi-billion-pound firms, with sixty per cent of the price of petrol and diesel in the UK made up of duties and VAT, one of the highest percentages across Europe.

Backing the campaign

FairFuelUK's Howard Cox emphasized that there is no excuse for the Chancellor to further burden drivers in the Budget when businesses only pay 25 per cent on their profits. This statement comes as Labour MP Graham Stringer became the first from his party to support the campaign to freeze fuel duty this year.

Pressure to maintain the freeze

The campaign, which has been advocating for a freeze on fuel duty for over a decade, is now facing speculation that the 5p cut may be reversed, leading to an inflationary increase next week. This could potentially add £3.85 to the cost of filling up an average family car.

Implications of a fuel duty hike

Mr. Stringer highlighted the impact of increasing fuel duty on the economy, stating that it would negatively affect productivity and businesses. FairFuelUK's Howard Cox raised concerns that raising fuel duty would go against Labour's manifesto promise not to raise taxes on working people, especially considering the significant percentage of the population reliant on driving.
