Far-right riots to 'haunt legal system for months and years,' warns Justice Secretary

Overwhelmed Justice System

Britain's far-right riots will have a lasting impact on the legal system, according to Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood. She cautioned that the recent disorder will disrupt efforts to address court backlogs and overcrowded prisons.

Rebuilding Efforts

Mahmood praised the Ministry of Justice for swiftly charging individuals involved in the riots. However, she expressed concern that the repercussions of the unrest will be felt for an extended period, making the task of rebuilding the justice system even more challenging.

Government Response

Highlighting the government's quick actions in addressing the crisis in the criminal justice system, Mahmood emphasized the importance of preventing a further escalation of the situation. More than 500 prison places have been created to accommodate those facing sentencing.

Arrests and Charges

Following the riots, 779 individuals have been arrested by the police, with 349 of them already facing charges. The National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) is actively pursuing those involved in the unrest.
