Drivers have made a clear demand for Labour to put an end to its ongoing "war on motorists" in a daring stunt at the party's conference. As attendees arrived in Liverpool, they were greeted by billboards drawing attention to Labour's track record on road-users.
Rejecting Sadiq Khan's ULEZ expansion
The Alliance of British Drivers used vans to circle the conference venue, slamming Sadiq Khan's expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in London. The controversial 20mph limits imposed by the Labour-run government in Wales were also criticized.
One billboard read, "Just Stop Labour's War on Motorists," while another indicated that the low-emissions zones were "only the beginning."
Backlash against Khan's ULEZ rollout
Sadiq Khan's implementation of the daily £12.50 charge for older, more polluting vehicles has faced strong opposition from drivers and has been attributed to Labour's loss in the Uxbridge by-election earlier this year.
Sir Keir Starmer, Labour's leader, has promised that there will be no additional ULEZ-style plans for other British cities if he becomes Prime Minister.
Resistance to 20mph zones
In the face of significant resistance from drivers, First Minister Mark Drakeford defiantly implemented 20mph zones in Wales.
Rishi Sunak's support for drivers
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has positioned himself as a strong advocate for drivers. He recently cut fuel duty and pushed back the ban on fossil fuel-powered vehicles by five years.
