GPS Tracking Devices Used to Catch Thieving Offenders

Dozens of criminals on parole have been caught in the act of stealing thanks to GPS ankle tags. Since 2021, a total of 58 unsolved thefts and burglaries have been solved using the built-in tracking devices on the tags. Police have been able to pinpoint the offenders at the scene of the crime and charge them accordingly.

Expansion of Tagging Program Deters Reoffending

The significant expansion of GPS tagging has not only helped solve crimes but has also acted as a deterrent for thousands of offenders. By using the technology, the government hopes to free up space in overcrowded prisons. Currently being piloted across 19 police forces, the expansion of GPS tagging is seen as a key strategy in cutting crime and reducing reoffending.

Justice Secretary Praises the Effectiveness of GPS Tags

Justice Secretary Alex Chalk has spoken highly of the impact of GPS tags in solving crimes and ensuring justice is served. He stated that the tags provide a sense of justice and act as a deterrent against further offending. By imposing limits on the offenders' liberty, GPS tags can help drive change and cut down on petty theft.

Tags Provide a Fresh Start for Offenders

Ministry of Justice data reveals that 700,000 neighborhood crimes mapped by police have no matches with GPS tag wearers. One former burglar, Andy from Gwent, who was placed on the tag for 12 months, shared his experience. He said that the constant monitoring made him feel like he was being watched 24/7 and that it served as a fresh start to turn his life around. He is now running his own business and staying on the straight and narrow.
