They smiled at one another before Carrie stepped aside for him to address the country.
After his speech, Boris rejoined her and they held hands again to walk into a Range Rover to visit the Queen.
He shook hands with an applauding crowd of colleagues and staff while Carrie hugged and blew kisses before they left Downing Street for the final time.

The Prime Minister told the country “this is it, folks” as he branded himself a “booster rocket that has fulfilled its function”.
He said he will offer the new Government his “most fervent support” and vowed the country will come out stronger from tough times ahead.
He added: “But I say to my fellow Conservatives, it’s time for politics to be over, folks. It’s time to get behind Liz Truss.
“That is what the people of this country wants. That’s what they need. And that’s what they deserve.”
He insisted that if his dog Dilyn and No10 resident cat Larry can get along, then so can Tory MPs.
And he reflected on his legacy, highlighting the Government’s record on Brexit, supporting Ukraine and the Covid vaccine rollout.
