Trump's team exploring deportation plans
Donald Trump's team is reportedly looking into adopting a controversial plan initially proposed by the former British Tory government to deport illegal migrants to Rwanda. The plan, which was abandoned by Sir Keir Starmer when he assumed office as PM, is now being considered by allies of Mr. Trump.
Crackdown on illegal immigration
A source close to Trump's camp revealed, "Trump campaigned on a promise to crack down on illegal immigration - and he is determined to stick to it." The former US president won a significant victory by vowing to address the issue of illegal immigration and is now contemplating deporting illegal migrants to Rwanda and other countries to prevent them from staying on American soil.
Migrant crisis in the US and UK
The migrant crisis has reached new heights in America, with a staggering 10 million "encounters" with migrants attempting to cross into the US illegally recorded by authorities between January 2021 and September 2024. Meanwhile, the UK is grappling with its own illegal migration crisis, as 32,900 Channel migrants have crossed over in small boats so far this year, surpassing the total number for all of 2023.
UK's Rwanda deportation scheme
The British Tories had proposed a Rwanda deportation scheme as part of their strategy to address the illegal migration crisis. The plan involved paying Rwanda £370m over five years to deport hundreds of illegal immigrants to the African country. A facility called Hope Hostel was built using some of the funds, but it remains vacant and could potentially be utilized by another nation.
