Ministers Take Action
Ministers in the UK have announced a major crackdown on pet smuggling, with new rules that will prevent puppies and kittens under six months old from being brought into the country. The import ban will also apply to heavily pregnant animals and those with cruel mutilations like cropped ears.
Combatting Illegal and Immoral Practices
The move comes in response to concerns about animals being illegally smuggled into the UK by unscrupulous breeders. Last year alone, over 320,000 pets were brought into the country, with many suspected of being smuggled in unlawfully.
Tougher Regulations
The new legislation aims to close loopholes that allow smugglers to pass off animals as their own. The person-animal ratio for transportation will be reduced to five animals per vehicle or three animals per foot passenger. Additionally, the minimum age for imported animals will be raised from 15 weeks to six months to prevent long and stressful journeys that can have lasting impacts on the animals.
Government Stance
Environment Secretary Steve Barclay condemned pet smuggling as an "abhorrent trade" that causes suffering to animals. He emphasized the UK's commitment to ending this practice and ensuring the welfare of animals in the country.
Cracking Down on Mutilations
Under the new regulations, any animals with mutilations, such as cropped ears, will be ineligible for entry into the UK. Tory MP De Neil Hudson highlighted the influence of popular culture in normalizing such practices, citing Disney Pixar films like Up and celebrity culture.
