Veteran Tory Colonel Bob Stewart convicted after telling activist to "go back to Bahrain"
Veteran Conservative MP Bob Stewart has been found guilty of racially abusing activist Sayed Ahmed Alwadaei, telling him to "go back to Bahrain" during a confrontation outside the Foreign Office last year. Stewart, the MP for Beckenham, was charged with a racially aggravated public order offence at Westminster Magistrates Court. Chief magistrate Paul Goldspring ruled that Stewart would not be jailed but would instead face a £600 fine, with additional legal costs amounting to £1,435.
MP denies racism allegations, claims his "honor was at stake"
Throughout the trial, Stewart vehemently denied the allegations of racism, stating that it was "absurd" and "totally unfair" to accuse him of such behavior. He expressed his deep hurt at having to appear in court and insisted that he is not a racist. Stewart argued that his comments were in response to Alwadaei's accusation that he was corrupt and had taken money. He claimed that his "honor was at stake" in front of a large number of ambassadors and that he found Alwadaei's remarks extremely offensive.
