UK to officially blame China for cyber attack

Chinese hackers targeted the heart of British democracy, gaining access to personal details of 40 million voters, a report from Trending In The News has revealed. The UK government is set to officially point the finger at China for a 2021 cyber attack on the Electoral Commission, which oversees all UK elections.

US government to also attribute cyber attacks to Beijing

Additionally, the United States government is expected to accuse Beijing of cyber attacks on America. The Communist superstate will be named and shamed in Parliament, with key players facing hefty sanctions. Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden will caution politicians who have been targeted by Chinese hackers, and a number of Chinese suspects will be added to an official blacklist by the Foreign Office.

'Hostile actors' accessed sensitive voter information

The Electoral Commission confirmed last August that "hostile actors" infiltrated their data systems and email. Shaun McNally, the Electoral Commission Chief Executive, expressed regret over the lack of sufficient protections in place to prevent the cyber attack. The attackers were able to access reference copies of electoral registers, compromising the personal information of registered voters.

Parliament briefs China critics on cyber attacks

A group of vocal China critics, including former Tory leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith and SNP MP Stewart McDonald, have been briefed by Parliament's director of security Alison Giles about cyber attacks on their computers. These individuals are part of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China group, which monitors China's aggressive actions.
