CAT owners face a £500 fine if they don’t get their pets microchipped under new laws.
Ministers last night set out new proposals to make it easier to reunite lost or stolen cats with their owners in a fresh shake-up.
99 per cent of Brits supported a proposal to introduce compulsory cat chipping in the recent consultation.
They will also look at how to improve the system by allowing faster access to approved user and regular reminders for keeping records updated.
Breeders’ details will also be kept on a database to allow owners to trace them, too.
Animal Welfare Minister Lord Goldsmith said: “Pets are much loved members of the family, and microchipping is the best way of making sure owners can be reunited if their pet is ever sadly lost or stolen.
