Wes Streeting's criticism
A cabinet clash has unfolded as Wes Streeting criticized Ed Miliband for his opposition to military action in Syria back in 2013. At the time, then-Labour leader Mr. Miliband stood against strikes on Bashar al-Assad's regime following chemical attacks on civilians.
Streeting's perspective
Mr. Streeting, who is now the Energy Secretary, highlighted that the hesitation shown by the UK and US in 2013 allowed Russia to fill the void and support Assad, prolonging his grip on power. He emphasized that taking no action is also a choice with consequences.
Miliband's defense
On the other hand, Mr. Miliband defended his decision, stressing the importance of having a clear plan before engaging in military intervention. He cited the lessons learned from the Iraq war and the need for a well-defined strategy, including an exit plan.
Current situation
Assad has since sought refuge in Moscow after being overthrown by rebel forces. Number 10 reiterated that the Government's focus remains on the safety of civilians and facilitating a peaceful transition of power in Syria.
