Britain Bans Iran from UK Airspace in Response to Missile Sales to Russia

Sanctions Imposed

Britain has banned Iran's national airline, Iran Air, from flying over or landing in the UK as a response to Tehran selling cruise missiles to Russia. This move follows accusations from Foreign Secretary David Lammy of a "dangerous escalation" by Iran.

International Response

Germany and France have also joined in by canceling bilateral air service arrangements with Iran, further restricting Iran Air's operations. Direct flights between the UK and Iran will cease within 12 months.

US Warning and Sanctions

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed leaked intelligence that Russia has received ballistic missiles from Iran, warning of potential escalation. Sanctions have also been imposed on Russian cargo ships believed to be involved in transporting the arms.

Strong Condemnation

British officials have condemned Iran's actions, with David Lammy stating that supplying Russia with missiles for the invasion of Ukraine is a significant escalation. The UK stands with Ukraine and vows to pressure Iran to end its support for Russia's actions.
