BORIS Johnson’s dream of a tunnel linking Scotland and Northern Ireland will finally be sunk this week.
A report by Network Rail boss Sir Peter Hendy will rule the £15billion project is not viable.
The water is so deep it would require steep tunnelling that trains would be unable to travel down.
The only option would be a long, gradual decline — but that would require 80 miles of tunnel for 20 miles of water.
A source explained: “Trains can only travel at a certain gradient and the sea between the two land masses is almost 1,000ft deep.
“This would mean having the tunnel entrance about 30 miles from the coast at each side.
“This detailed report by Sir Peter Hendy will bury the project once and for all.”
Mr Johnson came up with the idea after experts ridiculed his proposals for a road bridge.
