Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson has issued a stark warning to Chancellor Rishi Sunak, stating that he is on the path to election defeat and needs a "massive kick in the pants." In a scathing attack, Johnson claimed that Sunak has failed to provide voters with anything to rally behind, leaving the Conservative Party "drifting to defeat." Johnson also accused Sunak of being a pawn in the hands of his former aide-turned-nemesis Dominic Cummings.
Boris Johnson's warning
In a conversation with his close confidante Nadine Dorries, Boris Johnson expressed his concerns about Rishi Sunak's current trajectory. Johnson emphasized the importance of having a clear agenda for change in the country and the need to address the growing disillusionment among voters. Johnson pointed out that many Brexit-supporting constituencies, which played a crucial role in the Conservative Party's victory in 2019, are now leaning towards Labour due to a perceived lack of progress and a failure to deliver on promised change.
Trouble for the Tories
The Conservative Party is currently trailing Labour by a significant margin of around 20 points in the opinion polls. This gap, if not addressed, could result in a victory for Labour and the installation of Sir Keir Starmer as the next Prime Minister. Many of Boris Johnson's allies are blaming Rishi Sunak for the downfall of his government after his resignation as Chancellor sparked a series of internal conflicts and a loss of public support.
Nadine Dorries, who has recently published a book about the alleged plot to remove Boris Johnson from office, famously compared Rishi Sunak to the Roman traitor Brutus for betraying the former Prime Minister.
