Army families have been living in "damp and mouldy" homes as more than 21,000 repair appointments were missed by contractors between April 2022 and March 2024, according to government data. The missed appointments were attributed to a previous IT issue, which has since been resolved.

The Ministry of Defence reportedly spent nearly £1.6 million on temporary accommodation for military families due to major repairs not being carried out. Shadow Armed Forces Minister Luke Pollard criticized the Tories for failing the forces and their families.

Government taking steps to improve military housing

The Ministry of Defence stated that more than 4 in 5 maintenance appointments were kept to their original slot. They are also investing an additional £400 million to improve military housing, including addressing damp and mould issues. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak acknowledged that defence accommodation is not always up to standard but assured that the government is committed to resolving the issue.
