NINTENDO’S Super Mario Bros. series is one of the most famous and recognisable video game series in the history of gaming.
The famous series is known for its fantastic level design, enjoyable platforming physics, and music so good it was even featured in the Super Mario Bros. movie largely untouched.
The Super Mario series kicked off in 1985 with the release of Super Mario Bros. on the NES
There are dozens of games in the Mario series, ranging all the way back from 1985 on the Nintendo Entertainment System up to 2021, with the release of the most recent game on Nintendo Switch.
Many of the games in the series are playable on Switch for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, but a fair few of them will require older consoles to try out.
There are 25 main series games in the Super Mario Bros. series – 16 2D side scrolling games and nine 3D platformers – not including spin-offs, remasters, or re-releases that add no new content.

While most Mario games don’t have a specific timeline placement, we do know how some of the games relate to each other on the timeline, and we can make educated guesses on others.
As such, this timeline is far from official, as Nintendo has never released an official timeline, but is as educated a guess as one can make from what little information we have.
For example, Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario Odyssey are firmly set after the Galaxy games, because they feature Captain Toad, who takes up that mantle and forms the Toad Brigade in Galaxy.
There are also dozens of spin-off games, including the Mario Kart and various Mario sports series, the Yoshi series, and the Luigi’s Mansion series.
