Lawsuit claims PlayStation artificially inflated game prices
A massive lawsuit is set to shake up the gaming industry as PlayStation faces allegations of artificially inflating game prices on the PlayStation Store. UK PlayStation owners who purchased games before 2022 could be entitled to compensation if the lawsuit is successful.
Exclusive games and Sony's dominance at the center of the case
The lawsuit claims that Sony's dominance in the industry has allowed it to secure exclusive games for PlayStation. As the only storefront selling these games, the suit argues that Sony has artificially inflated the prices, resulting in higher costs for consumers.
Competition Appeal Tribunal allows the case to proceed
Sony's lawyers have argued that the case is "flawed from start to finish," but the Competition Appeal Tribunal has given the green light for the lawsuit to proceed. The original claim of £5 billion ($6.5 billion) has now been inflated to £6.3 billion ($8 billion).
Compensation and potential price reductions
If Sony loses the court case, anyone who made purchases on the PlayStation Store prior to 2022 could be eligible for compensation. In a similar lawsuit in 2015, Sony was forced to offer compensation to PS Vita owners. If this lawsuit is successful, similar compensation may be offered. Additionally, a victory could result in reduced prices for exclusive games on the PlayStation Store in the future.
