PlayStation fans outraged over hidden resell policy – but don't panic just yet

PlayStation fans are up in arms over a message in the console's Terms of Service that seems to ban reselling of games. However, there's more to the story than meets the eye.

The joy of physical games

One of the advantages of buying physical games rather than digital ones is the ability to share and sell them. After completing a game, players can sell it back to stores and use the money towards purchasing a new title. They can also share or swap their game discs with friends, expanding their gaming library.

The hidden catch

PlayStation fans were shocked when a message from the console's Terms of Service began circulating on social media. The message stated that reselling disc-based or digital games is not allowed unless expressly authorized by PlayStation and, if the publisher is another company, by the publisher as well.

However, this policy is not new. Similar language can be found in the terms of service for other gaming companies like Xbox and Nintendo. In fact, some users even shared pictures of old game copies, such as Final Fantasy, showing the same wording on the back of the box.

The fine print

The key to understanding this policy is that it mainly applies to companies and scalpers, not individual consumers. The aim is to prevent bulk purchases of games for reselling or renting, which requires a special license. It also targets scalpers who buy rare games and hardware in bulk to drive up prices on platforms like eBay and Facebook Marketplace.

For the average gamer, this policy doesn't impact their ability to resell or share games. Individuals are still authorized to resell their games and share them with friends.

Clarification from PlayStation

Shuhei Yoshida, a senior executive at Sony, took to Twitter to clarify the situation. He confirmed that the new European Terms of Service do not prevent players from selling or sharing their disc-based PlayStation 4 products in the EU.

So, PlayStation fans can rest assured that they can continue to enjoy the benefits of physical games, including reselling and sharing, without any major restrictions.
