Sony Walks Back Live-Service Game Plans
Following the departure of SONY Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan last year, the company is reversing many of his decisions. Ryan had aimed to expand PlayStation's online offerings by investing heavily in live-service games.
Big Cancellations in the PlayStation Universe
The Last of Us Online was the first casualty in PlayStation's live-service game lineup, swiftly followed by the short-lived Concord, which was shut down after just two weeks.
Shifting Focus Away from Live-Service Games
Despite initial plans to create a viral hit akin to Fortnite, PlayStation has been canceling live-service projects, including entries for popular series like The Last of Us, Horizon, and Spider-Man. The live-service Spider-Man game titled The Great Web was reportedly axed in March 2024.
Sony's Stance on Studio Closures
While the cancellation of the God of War live-service game came as a surprise, Sony assures that the studios behind these projects, Bend Studios and Bluepoint Games, are not at risk of closure. Plans for Horizon Online, however, remain in motion as of September 2024.
PlayStation's Future Direction
PlayStation seems to be stepping back from live-service games following the Concord debacle, where the console exclusive was pulled just two weeks post-launch. The company emphasizes that it will continue to develop both single-player and live-service games, despite recent project cancellations.
