Nintendo to Close Switch eShop in China, Offering Four Free Games

Nintendo's popular Switch console will be shutting down its eShop services in China, affecting over a billion gamers in the country. The closure is set to take place in 2026, with download and redemption services ending on March 15, and sales and other online services ceasing on March 31.

Free Games Offered as Apology

As a gesture of goodwill, Nintendo and Tencent are offering Chinese Switch players the opportunity to claim four free games from a selection of popular titles. This includes games like Super Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, New Pokémon Snap, and more.

Partnership with Tencent

The delay in the Switch's release in China was due to Nintendo's partnership with Tencent, a leading game publishing company in the region. While the reason for the eShop shutdown remains unclear, speculation suggests changes in circumstances between the two companies or potential plans for a new partnership for the release of the Switch 2.

No Need for Concern in Other Regions

Switch players in regions outside of China need not worry about eShop closures, as it seems to be a specific decision related to partnership agreements. The eShop shutdown in China does not indicate any imminent closures in other parts of the world.
