Google extends deadline to convert Stadia controllers
Gamers who still have Google Stadia controllers gathering dust have been given a lifeline, as Google has extended the deadline for upgrading the controllers. Originally, users were given until the end of this year to convert their controllers, but now they have until the end of 2024.
Google Stadia: The failed "Netflix of gaming"
Google Stadia was once hailed as the "Netflix of gaming," a cloud streaming service that only required a controller and a Chrome device. However, the platform failed to gain traction and Google decided to shut it down at the end of 2022, leaving many gamers with controllers they could no longer use.
How to convert your Stadia controller
If you still have a Stadia controller and want to convert it into a standard PC controller, here's how:
- Make sure your Stadia controller is charged to at least 10% battery.
- Open the Chrome web browser on your PC and go to the Stadia web page.
- Click the Start button and tick the accept box to proceed with the conversion process.
- Plug your Stadia controller into your PC using a USB data cable and click Continue.
- Click Allow Chrome to verify.
- A popup box will appear, select the controller from the list, and click Connect.
- Unlock the Stadia controller by unplugging it, then plugging it back in while holding the three dot button. The status light should stay off.
- Press the three dot button, the Google Assistant button, A, and Y at the same time.
- Click Next step on the Chrome browser and then click Allow Chrome to download.
- Select SP Blank RT Family from the list and click Connect.
- The download will start, and once it's done, click Next step for the installation stage.
- Click Allow Chrome to install.
- Select USB COMPOSITE DEVICE from the popup box and click Connect.
- The installation will begin, so make sure not to unplug the controller or turn off your computer.
Pairing your Stadia controller with Bluetooth
If you have successfully switched your Stadia controller to Bluetooth mode, here's how to pair it with other gaming services:
- Hold the Stadia button and Y on the controller for about two seconds until the status light flashes orange.
- On your gaming device, search for a Bluetooth accessory and select the Stadia controller from the list.
With these steps, you can now make use of your Stadia controller for other wireless gaming services.
