THE Callisto Protocol is a new survival horror game coming this December from the director of Dead Space, Glen Schofield.
When creating horror games, hundreds of hours goes into research to figure out just how the human body reacts in various terrifying situations.
The horrors of The Callisto Protocol.
What does it look like when someone breaks their ankle while running away? How would it sound when a zombie rips a human’s heart out of their chest?
These are questions which need to be answered before you delve into the world of horror entertainment.
However, in an interview with GLHF, Schofield explains how he was hesitant to explore actual human anatomy when it came to researching his game.
He says: “Studying anatomy. We didn’t spend a lot of time looking at dead bodies. That’s not cool.
“So out of respect, we spent a lot of time looking at prosthetics, which are all over the internet.
“Sometimes you can’t tell that it’s not real. So we let them do that horrible research. And then we will never deal with it.”
He went on to explain that a lot of the gore comes from the monsters in The Callisto Protocol rather than the humans.
This means that it would be impossible for him to create entirely realistic animations in this case.
He continued: “We’ll have a monster that doesn’t have human anatomy. So I mean, we had to make a lot of it up.
“We do concept art. We have a big concept art team. They start day one, and they’re still working at the end.”
While survival horror is at the core of his upcoming game he also expressed that he wanted to work on something more action orientated.
He even says he has a few ideas he’s planning to pitch next month for a sequel before the game is even released.
On Callisto Schofield said: “I didn’t want to go too action-y, but I didn’t want to leave the action people behind.
“I wish that fans would embrace the action horror game a little bit more, and I’d like to do that with the sequel, actually.
“I think that would be pretty damn cool. You have to think about that.
“In September, I’m going to Krafton to sell a couple of ideas. So I gotta be ready.”
Whether the bodies look realistic or not we’ll have to wait for December to find out.
