UN Secretary-General Establishes Advisory Committee
The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has announced the creation of a 39-member advisory committee tasked with addressing global regulation issues surrounding artificial intelligence (AI). The committee includes representatives from the tech industry, government officials from various countries, and scholars from around the world.
Diverse Representation from Six Continents
The advisory committee comprises individuals from diverse backgrounds and represents six continents. Notable members include executives from tech giants Sony, OpenAI, and Microsoft. The committee also includes AI experts, lawyers, and scholars from countries such as the United States, Russia, Japan, China, and Egypt.
Recognizing the Impact of AI
In an official statement, Guterres acknowledged the positive impact of AI but also highlighted the potential risks it poses. He expressed concerns about the malicious use of AI, which could undermine trust in institutions, weaken social cohesion, and threaten democracy.
Global Collaboration on AI Governance
With the growing interest and curiosity surrounding AI technology, governments worldwide are working on legislation to regulate its use. In response, the United Nations aims to release initial suggestions on AI governance by the end of this year, with comprehensive recommendations expected by the summer of 2024. The organization seeks to establish a scientific consensus on AI-related risks and challenges and enhance global collaboration in AI governance.
The advisory committee's inaugural meeting is scheduled for October 27.
