Phishing Scam Targets Crypto Readers
Phishing scammers have created clone websites of popular crypto media outlet Blockworks and Ethereum blockchain scanner Etherscan, in an attempt to trick unsuspecting readers into connecting their wallets to a crypto drainer. The scam involves a fake Blockworks site displaying a fake news report about a multimillion-dollar "approvals exploit" on the decentralized exchange Uniswap. Users are then encouraged to visit a fake Etherscan website to rescind approvals.
Fake News Spreads on Reddit
The fake Uniswap news article was posted on Reddit across several popular crypto-related subreddits by compromised Reddit accounts. This allowed the scammers to reach a wider audience and increase the chances of victims falling for the scam.
Fraudulent Etherscan Website
The fake Etherscan website, which claims to be a token and smart contract approval checker, actually contains a wallet drainer. Blockchain security firm Beosin reviewed the drainer's smart contract and found that the attacker aims to drain wallets with at least 0.1 Ether (ETH), worth $180. However, the drainer is not set up correctly and does not initiate a phishing transaction after a wallet is connected.
Age Check of Fake Sites
An investigation into the domains used for the scam revealed that the fake Etherscan site, approvalscan.io, was registered on October 25th, while the fake Blockworks site, blockworks.media, was registered a day later. This suggests that the scammers quickly set up the clone sites to carry out their fraudulent activities.
Other Media Outlets Targeted
This is not the first time that scammers have cloned crypto media websites. In a recent Twitter post, Web3 anti-scam platform Scam Sniffer revealed that scammers had deployed a similar wallet drainer on a website cloning the crypto news outlet Decrypt. It is important for readers to be cautious and verify the authenticity of websites before connecting their wallets or providing any sensitive information.
