Introducing MiniPay

The Opera web platform has announced its latest offering for African users - MiniPay, a non-custodial stablecoin wallet integrated into the Opera mobile web browser. This innovative wallet will be built on the Celo blockchain and will allow users in Africa to send and receive stablecoins using their existing mobile numbers.

Expanding in Africa

With over 100 million users in Africa and 17 years of operation on the continent, Opera is no stranger to the African market. The launch of MiniPay is set to begin in the coming months, starting with Nigeria as its first market.

Low Fees and Convenient Integration

The MiniPay wallet will operate with sub-cent fees, making it an affordable option for users. Additionally, users can onboard and backup their wallets using their Google credentials. The wallet has also integrated with local payment methods like Airtime and MPesa, as well as traditional bank transfers, allowing users to easily add and withdraw stablecoins in their local currency.

Building on Celo

The integration with the Celo blockchain not only provides stability and security but also opens the door for more Ethereum-compatible decentralized applications (dApps) to be built for MiniPay.

Cointelegraph has reached out to Opera and Celo for further comments on this exciting development.

Opera's Innovations

This is not the first time Opera has introduced innovative features to its web browser. In April of this year, the company announced the integration of generative artificial intelligence (AI) called AI Prompt. This feature provides users with contextual prompts for web pages or highlighted text, enhancing the browsing experience.

Furthermore, Opera launched a suite of security tools in December, aimed at protecting users against malicious actors in the Web3 space.
