The Nigerian government is showing its support for artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives by granting a total of $289,980 (225 million naira) to 45 AI-focused startups and researchers. The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, made this announcement on Friday, Oct. 13.

Driving Economic Advancement with AI

The newly introduced Nigeria Artificial Intelligence Research Scheme aims to promote the use of AI to drive economic advancement. The scheme focuses on various sectors including Agriculture, Education and Workforce, Finance, Governance, Healthcare, Utility, and Sustainability.

Eligibility and Requirements

To be eligible for the grant, applicants must form a consortium consisting of a startup or tech company, a researcher from a Nigerian university, or a foreign researcher. They are also required to submit a research proposal aligned with the Ministry's AI focus areas and a comprehensive project proposal highlighting the potential economic impact in Nigeria.

Applicants must have a proven track record of excellence in research or entrepreneurship and are expected to publish at least one peer-reviewed article within a year of receiving the grant.

Collaboration with Nigerian Scientists

In August, the Nigerian government invited scientists of Nigerian heritage and globally renowned experts who have worked in the Nigerian market to collaborate in developing the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy.

Application Process

The application period for the grant runs from Oct. 13, 2023, to Nov. 15, 2023. All submissions must be made through the specified online platform. A panel of AI specialists will assess the proposals, and shortlisted applicants will be notified via email and invited for interviews.
