Huobi Global's HTX crypto exchange was hacked on September 24, according to a report from blockchain analytics platform Cyvers. The attack resulted in the theft of $7.9 million worth of cryptocurrency.

The exchange knows the identity of the attacker

A known hot wallet belonging to Huobi posted a message in Chinese to the attacker. The message stated that the exchange knows the identity of the attacker and offered to let them keep 5% of the stolen funds as a "white-hat bonus," but only if they return the remaining 95%.

The details of the attack

On September 24 at 10:00 am UTC, a suspected Huobi hot wallet transferred 4,999 Ether (ETH), worth approximately $7.9 million, to an address with no previous history. The next day, another wallet belonging to Huobi sent a message to the attacker in Chinese, requesting the return of the funds and offering the bonus.

Confirmation of the attacker's identity

The wallet that sent the message has been identified as a Huobi hot wallet by blockchain analytics platform Arkham Intelligence. According to Cyvers, this wallet is listed on a Huobi support page as belonging to the exchange.
