Community Calls Out Misleading and Deceptive Identities
Members of the cryptocurrency community have come together to support a plea on X, urging Elon Musk to remove a profile on the platform that claims to be the legendary Bitcoin creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. The post, made by an X user called Pledditor, argues that both the account representing Satoshi Nakamoto and the account named "Bitcoin" should be taken down as they violate the platform's terms of service by using misleading and deceptive identities. Pledditor likened the situation to making fake accounts for Tesla or Elon Musk, stating that "you can't misappropriate someone else's identity without disclosing you are a parody account."
Platform Policy Calls Out Misappropriation of Identities
According to the terms and conditions of the X platform, there is a specific policy in place to discourage the use of misleading or deceptive identities. The policy states that users are not allowed to misappropriate the identity of individuals, groups, or organizations, or use a fake identity to deceive others. Pledditor's post argues that both the accounts claiming to be Satoshi Nakamoto and Bitcoin violate this policy.
A Controversial Account Run by Andy Rowe
Aside from the ongoing debate about the true identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, which has long been a topic of discussion in the Bitcoin and crypto community, the account in question has been allegedly run by an X user named Andy Rowe since 2018. In a post from July 2, 2018, Rowe claimed to curate "quotes" for the Satoshi account. Following this, the account remained inactive until October 2 of this year, when it made a new post stating that "Bitcoin is a predicate machine" and indicated that it would further explore aspects of the Bitcoin whitepaper in the upcoming months.
Community Calls for Action
Pledditor's post calling for the removal of the fake Satoshi Nakamoto account has received significant support from the crypto community. Users described the account as "embarrassing" and insisted that action needs to be taken immediately. One user claimed to have previously reached out to administrators about these accounts but was ignored. Another user suggested that the accounts should be disabled, pointing to X's action in dealing with the account named "@internet" as a precedent.
The Mystery of Satoshi's True Identity Continues
The true identity of Satoshi Nakamoto remains unknown, with numerous claimants over the years. One of the most prominent figures claiming to be Satoshi is Craig Wright. On July 21, a UK court granted Wright an appeal in the Bitcoin rights lawsuit, in which he asserted copyright ownership of the Bitcoin whitepaper and database.
