A £10 billion spending bonanza is already underway as England march on with fans splashing out on booze, food, merchandise and general retail spending.

Britain’s top psychologist Sir Cary Cooper says the feelgood factor is the highest since the Covid crisis started with fans looking forward to football and holidays.

The top doc says football fun, hols optimism, and the vaccination rollout have combined to lift the nation’s spirits after months of Covid hell.

Prof Cooper, president of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, said: “The national mood is now the best since Covid began.

“People are proud of England doing so well, taking pleasure watching with friends after missing social interaction, and enjoying seeing fans back in stadiums.

“Everyone needs a holiday, so double-jab overseas trips being allowed makes people feel really good. Vaccinations are progressing well, with the virus more under control and the end of restrictions in July nearing, so people are happy life is about to return to something like normal.”

Supermarkets and high streets are also cashing in with gazebo and garden furniture sales spiking as fans plan safe, outdoor meets to watch games.

People spend more – including on non-football related products – when they are happier, retail experts say.

Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the Centre for Retail Research, said: “Euro 2020 is creating a substantial boost to the economy. And should England reach the final, the UK is set for a more significant cash injection from fans’ spending power.”
