Housework Reduces Cancer Risk, Study Finds

Light Exercise in Daily Chores

Researchers have discovered that housework can significantly reduce the risk of cancer as it is considered light exercise. Simple tasks like walking to the shops or doing household chores have been linked to improved health.

Housework as Light Exercise

Household chores such as pushing the vacuum cleaner, scrubbing the shower, and tending to flowerbeds can also elevate the heart rate, contributing to the health benefits of housework.

Importance of Daily Movement

Professor Aiden Doherty from Oxford University emphasized the importance of consistent movement in reducing cancer risk. He stated that engaging in simple, low-intensity activities like walking can play a crucial role in lowering the risk of developing cancer.

Study Findings

The study, which analyzed data from activity-tracking wristbands worn by 85,394 middle-aged individuals, revealed that the most active participants had a 25% lower risk of cancer compared to the least active individuals. Walking 7,000 steps per day was associated with an 11% lower risk of cancer, while increasing it to 9,000 steps lowered the risk by 16%.
