67-Year-Old Man Receives Groundbreaking Lung Cancer Vaccine in the UK

Game-Changing Vaccine

A 67-year-old man in the UK has become the first person in the country to receive a 'game-changing' lung cancer vaccine. Janusz Racz, who had his cancer discovered 'by coincidence,' is participating in a trial for the vaccine that primes the body to fight the disease.

New Hope for Cancer Treatment

The vaccine, named BNT116, works by helping the immune system recognize and combat tumour markers associated with non-small cell lung cancer. By using mRNA technology, similar to that of the Covid-19 vaccine, the treatment targets cancer cells while leaving healthy cells unaffected.

A Personal Journey

Janusz Racz, a scientist and father of three, was diagnosed with lung cancer in May. After undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy, he opted to join the trial for the new vaccine. The hope is that the vaccine will not only provide defense against cancer cells for him but also contribute to future advancements in cancer therapy.

Potential Revolution in Cancer Care

NHS England's national cancer director, Dame Cally Palmer, highlighted the significance of cancer vaccines like the one being trialed. The potential success of such treatments could be revolutionary in preventing cancer recurrence and offering hope to patients. Leading charity Macmillan also praised the development as a 'hugely exciting step forward' in lung cancer treatment.
