Junk food linked to over 30 illnesses and early death
Junk food has been linked to more than 30 illnesses, including cancer, heart problems, type 2 diabetes, and anxiety, according to research. Australian scientists found that ultra-processed foods like ready meals and fizzy drinks can significantly increase the risk of these health issues.
Public Health Measures Urgently Needed
Dr. Charlotte Gupta from Central Queensland University emphasized the need for more public health measures to curb the consumption of unhealthy snacks. The study also highlighted that sausages, crisps, breakfast cereals, sweets, and chocolate fall under the category of ultra-processed foods.
Health Risks Amplified by Junk Food
Research involving nearly 10 million people from 14 different studies revealed that the consumption of junk food can lead to a 50% increase in the risk of dying from heart disease. The likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes also rose by 12% with higher junk food intake, while the risk of anxiety increased by up to 53%.
Call for Action
Lead author Dr. Melissa Lane stressed the need for urgent research and public health actions to minimize the consumption of ultra-processed foods for improved population health. Professor Amelia Lake from Teesside University highlighted the importance of this research in shaping future policies and directions.
Choosing Healthier Alternatives
Another study found that drinking one glass of soda a day could increase the risk of deadly kidney disease by a fifth. The suggestion was to switch to fruit juices instead. Additionally, displaying calorie information on restaurant menus could potentially prevent hundreds of early deaths between 2022 and 2041, according to scientists from Liverpool University.
