James Heappey reckons that Ukraine gets better military kit from Britain than our armed forces
He said: ‘I find it nuts that I can procure stuff at speed for the Ukrainian armed forces’
The frustrated Armed Forces Minister told Times Radio yesterday: “I find it nuts that I can procure stuff at speed for the Ukrainian armed forces that make them, in some cases, more sophisticated in their sensors and more lethal in their munitions than the UK is.
“We’ve seen the speed with which we can make a difference for Ukraine.
“So why on earth wouldn’t we want to do that for our own armed forces?”
UK support for Ukraine has included a squad of Challenger tanks, 10,000 anti-tank missiles, around 200 armoured vehicles and 200,000 artillery rounds.
Military chiefs have had to buy ammo from South Asia to replace stock sent out.
Mr Heappey called on the defence industry, innovators and “military cunning” to help boost our capabilities.
This month’s Budget included an £11billion boost in spending.
A No10 spokesman said: “This government’s completely committed to defence.”
