The Contenders
The Tory leadership race has officially begun with six contenders vying for the top spot. Kemi Badenoch, Dame Priti Patel, Mel Stride, Tom Tugendhat, James Cleverly, and Robert Jenrick are all in the running after receiving the backing of 10 MPs.
Nominations closed recently, and the next few months will see multiple rounds of voting by MPs and party members to narrow down the field.
Robert Jenrick
Former immigration minister Robert Jenrick has transformed his political image from a centrist Remainer to a right-wing figure. Known for his hardline immigration views, Jenrick has the support of leading Tory figures and is a frontrunner with bookmakers.
Tom Tugendhat
Shadow security minister Tom Tugendhat is gearing up for a battle with James Cleverly for the centrist crown. With experience in journalism, the army, and the Foreign Office, Tugendhat is positioning himself as a viable alternative to the current government.
Kemi Badenoch
Bookies' favourite Kemi Badenoch is seen as a rising star in the party. Known for her outspoken views on various issues, Badenoch aims to lead a party focused on renewal and rebuilding by 2030.
James Cleverly
James Cleverly, with past Cabinet experience, is running on a platform of healing Tory divisions and broadening the party's appeal. He promises to unite different factions within the party and beyond.
Mel Stride
Considered a moderate centrist, Mel Stride is close to Rishi Sunak and believes he can unite the party after recent challenges. Despite his media presence, bookmakers have placed him as an underdog in the race.
Priti Patel
A eurosceptic with a strong track record in government, Dame Priti Patel is back in the race promising experienced and strong leadership. Patel aims to harness the talent within the Conservative party to address pressing challenges.
