New Role to Tackle Issues Facing Armed Forces
Sir Keir Starmer is set to unveil a new Squaddies Czar role in his first King's Speech, aiming to address issues affecting troops and their families. The Prime Minister's plan includes appointing an Armed Forces Commissioner to tackle challenges within the military.
Renewing Britain's Commitment to Service Personnel
In a bid to renew the country's moral contract with service personnel, the PM will introduce this new role, which is part of a lineup of 35 laws to be announced at the parliamentary ceremony on Wednesday.
Powers of the Commissioner and Legislative Agenda
The newly appointed commissioner will have the authority to investigate issues like poor housing quality and will report findings directly to parliament. Additionally, plans to boost homebuilding and grant enhanced powers to trade unions will be revealed.
Focus on Economic Growth
Sir Keir emphasized that kickstarting economic growth is a top priority within the legislative agenda. He stated, "National renewal will not be easy, but this is just the beginning of our plans for the next five years."
Opposition's Concerns
However, Shadow Business Secretary Kevin Hollinrake raised concerns about the potential impact of the new workplace regulations and increased union powers proposed in the King's Speech. He warned that these measures could lead to job cuts, harm small businesses, and deter investment.
