GREEN national hero Sir David Attenborough warned last night the world risks being “overcome by catastrophe”, in a eve of COP26 rally cry to world leaders.

The PM’s climate adviser said he was “hoping and praying” for a breakthrough at Glasgow – heaping pressure on Boris to get a deal.

His plea came as he wished “bon voyage” to a new historic ship named after him, which is soon to set sail to the Antarctic for vital climate change research.

The £200million ship was originally nominated by the public to be dubbed Boaty McBoat Face, but ministers stepped in and overruled the decision.

Instead, climate legend Sir David posed up with a baby sub on the ship which has been named ‘Boaty’ instead, saying he was “so proud” to see it set sail.

Appearing on it yesterday he said: “We all know the magnitude of the dangers facing us in the immediate future.

“Would it not be marvellous to suppose that as a consequence of our discoveries, and science’s discoveries, the nations of the world joined together and actually did something in this coming COP?”

But they named a smaller sub after it instead…

It came as President Biden’s climate envoy said the crunch summit was a “chance to win a victory for the next century, for life on this planet”.

John Kerry said there was “real, meaningful momentum” but world leaders must step up and act now.

He said: “Mother Nature only has one measure of how much emissions are in our atmosphere.

“She doesn’t measure whether it’s US, China, Russia, Mexico, Brazil, it’s just atmospheric.

“Every ounce matters, every tenth of a degree of temperature matters.”
