Robert Jenrick accuses Macron of not caring about Channel crossings

Robert Jenrick accuses Macron of not caring about Channel crossings

Accusations against Macron

In a bold statement, Robert Jenrick, a Tory leadership contender, criticized French President Emmanuel Macron, claiming that France cannot be relied upon to stop small boats crossing the Channel due to Macron's lack of concern following Brexit.

Controversial proposal revealed

Jenrick's comments came after a leaked proposal revealed a plan he made as immigration minister to pay France to take successful asylum seekers from the UK and return illegal immigrants, a plan that was ultimately rejected by Macron.

Jenrick's stance on the issue

Jenrick defended the proposal as a necessary intervention to deter migrants from making the dangerous journey across the Channel and criticized Macron for not being open to solutions, possibly as a response to Brexit.

Government's current approach

Despite the UK government paying France significant sums to patrol their beaches and intercept boats, illegal migration numbers remain high. Jenrick believes that leaving the European Convention of Human Rights is the key to resolving the crisis.
