Sunak refuses to guarantee HS2 extension to Manchester
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has dropped his strongest hint yet that the controversial HS2 project could be facing cuts. When questioned about the high-speed rail line's future, Sunak declined to guarantee that it would ever reach Manchester, stating that he would not speculate on future decisions.
HS2 budget cuts feared
Concerns have been growing that HS2 could be significantly scaled back in order to save billions of pounds from its budget. The government has already scrapped plans for the line to extend to Leeds and cancelled the central London terminal at Euston. Critics argue that the Conservatives are betraying their promises on rail infrastructure, while the Labour party has pledged to complete the project in its entirety.
Sunak prioritizes energy infrastructure
While HS2's future remains uncertain, Sunak emphasized the government's commitment to bolstering Britain's energy infrastructure. He announced a new plan that would provide industry leaders with certainty on new projects and give local communities a say. Additionally, he outlined changes to the grid connection process to prioritize those ready for connection.
Investment in green research
As part of the government's efforts to promote eco-friendly technologies, a £150 million fund will be allocated for groundbreaking research in the green sector.
