Rishi Sunak has a 'Fighting Chance' of Cutting Net Migration to 250,000 as Foreign Student Applications Drop

Sharp Drop in Foreign Student Applications

PM Rishi Sunak may have a shot at reducing net migration to 250,000, thanks to a significant decrease in foreign student applications. The ban on overseas learners bringing family with them in January has led to a larger-than-expected decline, according to Migration Advisory Committee chairman Brian Bell.

Manifesto Pledge in Sight

Achieving the goal of bringing net migration below a quarter of a million would not only be a significant win for the Prime Minister but also fulfill a promise made in the 2019 manifesto. The current peak of net migration stands at 745,000 in 2022.

Concerns and Criticisms

Despite the potential positive impact on net migration, there are concerns raised by the independent committee's report. Foreign graduates on the visa scheme are found to be earning less than minimum wage workers, sparking criticism from Tory MPs like Neil O'Brien and former Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick.

The debate continues as to whether the graduate visa route should be maintained, especially considering the reported income levels of foreign graduates.
