Rishi Sunak Faces Tory Backlash Over Concerns of Record Rise in Net Migration

700,000 Foreigners Enter Britain, Equivalent to the Population of Newcastle

UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak is preparing for a potential backlash from fellow Tories as fears of a significant increase in net migration loom. Insiders are concerned that the figures could reveal that as many as 700,000 foreigners entered Britain in the year leading up to June, roughly equivalent to the population of Newcastle.

Tragic Drowning Incident in French Waters

The concerns about net migration come in the wake of a tragic incident in which two migrants, a man, and a woman in their thirties, drowned after a small boat carrying people capsized in French waters. Another victim was airlifted to the hospital, while 57 passengers were rescued.

Net Migration Expected to Surpass Previous High

Net migration is projected to surpass the previous 12-month high of 606,000 in 2022, leading to calls for stricter immigration controls. This surge in numbers makes it increasingly unlikely that Prime Minister Boris Johnson will be able to fulfill his promise to bring net migration below 245,000, as stated in the Conservative Party's 2019 election manifesto.

Potential Plans to Limit Health Workers Bringing Relatives

Ministers are considering plans to restrict overseas health workers from bringing more than one relative with them as part of efforts to manage immigration. Tory MP Tom Hunt emphasized the importance of reducing migration numbers, stating that the majority of the electorate believes that migration is too high.
