Dame Cressida said last week she had ‘no choice’ but to step down after Labour London Mayor Sadiq Khan said he had lost ‘confidence’ in her

She has vowed to clean up London’s 32,500 full-time officer force after a report identified a “culture of misogyny, harassment, racism and homophobia”.

A source said she could choose a candidate from outside the force as a “Met lifer” may be less likely to shake things up.

She could look to the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand — fellow members with the UK of The Five Eyes intelligence alliance.

A Whitehall insider said: “We want someone who has spent some time out of the Met, who can come in and enact culture change.

“It will be a global search. It could be someone from one of our Five Eye partners.”

Dame Cressida said last week she had “no choice” but to step down after Labour London Mayor Sadiq Khan said he had lost “confidence” in her.

His intervention angered Ms Patel — but she must consult him before the next appointee is made to lead the 180-station force, with its £3.24billion annual budget.

Mr Khan said he will back her choice only if they can deal with the Met’s deep “cultural problems”.

He added: “They need to have a proper and robust plan to deal with it.”
