Post Office boss stripped of CBE by King for 'bringing honours system into disrepute'

Disgraced Former Post Office Boss Loses CBE

The former Post Office boss Paula Vennells has been formally stripped of her CBE by the King. This action comes after she faced backlash for her role in the Horizon postmaster scandal.

Revoked by the Sovereign

The Cabinet Office has confirmed that Paula Vennells' CBE has been "revoked by the Sovereign" due to her actions being deemed to have "brought the honours system into disrepute." She is among a list of 14 individuals who have had their honours revoked since August 2023.

Post Office Scandal Unveiled

The scandal involving faulty Horizon accounting software led to the wrongful prosecution of hundreds of postmasters during Paula Vennells' tenure at the Post Office. This issue was highlighted in an ITV drama, sparking public outrage.

Pressure to Relinquish CBE

After facing pressure from the public, with over 1.2 million people signing a petition, as well as Downing Street indicating its support for her to lose the honour, Paula Vennells announced in January that she would give back her CBE.

New Laws to Quash Convictions

Ministers are working on urgent legislation to overturn Post Office convictions and provide compensation to victims of the scandal. The aim is to clear the majority of victims by the end of July, even if it means some guilty individuals may go free.
