More new UK jobs taken by non-EU migrants than Brits last year, data reveals

Non-EU migrants dominate UK job market

Last year, a staggering three out of five new jobs in the UK were taken by migrants from outside the EU, according to government data. A total of 420,066 new UK jobs were filled by non-EU migrants, surpassing the number of jobs taken by Brits. The figures highlight how the UK job market is heavily reliant on workers from overseas.

Rapid increase in non-EU workers

The Office for National Statistics reported that the number of non-EU workers on UK payrolls has increased by a third in just two years. In December 2020, there were 1,921,098 non-EU workers in the UK, but by December 2022, this number had risen to 2,556,741, marking a 33.08% rise.

London sees significant rise in non-EU workers

The trend of increasing non-EU workers is particularly prominent in London. In December 2022, a record-breaking 934,046 non-EU workers were registered in the capital, representing an increase of 118,565 compared to the previous year.

Regional impact

Almost all regions in the UK experienced a substantial annual rise in non-EU workers between December 2021 and 2022. In the North East, the number of non-EU employees rose by 30%, from 37,131 to 48,431. The West Midlands saw a 22% increase, from 168,820 to 206,939, while Yorkshire and The Humber experienced a 24% rise, from 105,466 to 130,928.

Industries relying on non-EU migrants

The NHS, care homes, and seasonal farm work are among the sectors that heavily rely on non-EU migrants for employment. These industries contribute significantly to the overall migration numbers in the UK.

Decline in EU workers

While migration overall is on the rise, the number of workers coming to the UK from EU countries has been steadily declining in recent years.
