Gaetz steps back

Matt Gaetz has removed his name from consideration as President-elect Donald Trump’s attorney general candidate. This decision comes as Gaetz is being investigated by the House Ethics Committee for federal sex-trafficking allegations.

Withdrawal and clarification

President-elect Trump nominated Gaetz as his attorney general on November 13. Gaetz clarified that his confirmation had become a distraction to the incoming Trump and JD Vance administration, leading him to withdraw his name from consideration.

Future plans

After resigning from his seat in the House of Representatives, Gaetz is speculated to be a potential nominee for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis' state's next senior senator, following Senator Marco Rubio's nomination as Trump’s secretary of state.

Sex-trafficking probe

Gaetz has been under investigation for allegations of sexual misconduct, drug use, and misuse of campaign funds. The Justice Department also probed Gaetz over sex trafficking allegations, with former friend Joel Greenberg cooperating with authorities.
